Even on days when the sky above the Dachstein is grey, there’s no chance of boredom setting in in Schladming-Dachstein. The region offers a wide range of places to visit and leisure activities that are fun whatever the weather – from fascinating museums and water parks to indoor adventures for the whole family. We’ve put together a list of the region’s best bad-weather activities for you.
Steiner1888 Wool World in Mandling
A worthwhile outing on a rainy day takes you to the Steiner1888 Wool World in Mandling. During a multimedia tour of the loden factory, you’ll find a 3D cinema, exciting hands-on stations and information screens that bring the history and production of this traditional loden fabric to life. Afterwards, the on-site café invites you to enjoy coffee and cake – a cosy way to round off a rainy day.
Swimming & Thermal Baths
When it gets wet outside, a visit to one of the water parks or thermal baths is just the thing. The Schladming Water Park delights visitors with a spacious indoor pool, large slides and a wellness area with a sauna. In Ramsau, too, a cosy indoor pool with an aqua track and a baby pool awaits you. If you fancy going a bit further afield, the Soletherme Amadé in Altenmarkt and the Grimmingtherme in Bad Mitterndorf are two popular thermal spas, around 30 to 40 minutes’ drive away. Admission to the regional indoor swimming pools is already included with the free Schladming-Dachstein Card.
Ice and Salt Worlds
An impressive day-out destination whatever the weather is the Eisriesenwelt in Werfen – around a 55-minute drive away, it is the world’s largest ice cave, which delights visitors with its immense ice formations. Also well worth a visit is the Salzwelten Altaussee salt mine, Austria’s largest active salt mine, which offers fascinating insights into the time-honoured tradition of salt mining.
Castles, palaces & museums
History buffs will be in their element in this region. Trautenfels Castle offers a fascinating insight into the traditions and way of life in the Enns Valley, whilst Admont Benedictine Abbey delights visitors with its impressive abbey library and diverse exhibitions – you can visit both attractions free of charge with the Schladming-Dachstein Card. Those who love the Middle Ages should visit Hohenwerfen Castle or Strechau Castle near Lassing. Smaller museums, such as the Schladming Town Museum or the Dachstein Museum, also make for an informative day out.
For a relaxing day of sightseeing, a trip to the nearby Mozart city of Salzburg is also highly recommended. The historic old town, with Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mozart’s birthplace and the famous Getreidegasse, is less than an hour’s drive away.

Action
You don’t have to miss out on exercise when the weather’s bad. Rafting and canyoning tours are ideal for rainy days – after all, you’re bound to get wet anyway. Several operators in the region organise these action-packed adventures, which are suitable for children aged 6 and over.
Family programme & Children’s activities
The region offers a particularly varied range of bad-weather activities for your younger guests. At the indoor adventure climbing park in St. Nikolai in the Sölktal valley, numerous stations, slides and trampolines await adventurous children. Young craftspeople can try their hand at creative activities in the children’s carpentry workshop or whilst baking bread together, whilst the children’s art studio invites them to enjoy creative sessions that will create lasting holiday memories. A treasure hunt through Schladming or the interactive adventure game ‘The Secret of the Three Towers’ in Radstadt also provide exciting entertainment whatever the weather. Those who prefer a more relaxed pace will find enjoyable family fun bowling at the Gasthof Brückenhof in Ramsau or at Pizzeria Aigner in Haus im Ennstal. Many of these activities are even free with the Schladming-Dachstein Card.
Live Woodturning & Guided Tours
A special experience, even in bad weather, awaits you at Lukas Lettmayer’s woodturning workshop in Weißenbach. Every Tuesday and Thursday, you can watch the master woodturner at work and see how, with a wealth of experience and attention to detail, he creates unique pieces from Swiss stone pine and fruit tree wood. Workshop tours for groups are also available by prior arrangement. In the adjoining shop, you’ll also find lovely wooden souvenirs and gifts to take home.
Leisure & Culture
If you’d rather take it easy on a rainy day, Schladming boasts an inviting pedestrianised area with numerous shops, boutiques, cafés and restaurants – ideal for a leisurely spot of shopping. A visit to the Schladming Brewery, complete with a guided tour and beer tasting, or to the Dachstein Kaffee coffee roastery, featuring a tasting session and barista workshop, rounds off a cultural day out.
